  22. SYMPTOM:
  23. Unable to install Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Mail, Powerpoint,
  24. Access) as an Administrative installation to run across a Personal
  25. NetWare (PNW) network.
  26.  
  27. When doing an administrative network installation of Microsoft Office
  28. onto a Personal NetWare server, the installation fails at the very
  29. end with the following message:
  30.  
  31. "Cannot change properties of the file named: X:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.INI. 
  32. It is in use by another application."
  33.           Retry, Cancel
  34.  
  35. CAUSE:
  36. The SETUP.INI file is a read-only file stored on the installation
  37. diskettes.  During installation it is copied to the server's hard
  38. drive as a read-only file.  Microsoft Office opens and closes this
  39. file multiple times in the installation process.  In all cases except
  40. for the very end of install, this file is opened as (Deny Write,
  41. Read).  At the very end however, the file is opened with desired
  42. access of (Deny Write, Deny Read, Write).  These access rights are
  43. being expressed as NCP equivalents to the DOS call being made.  At
  44. this point, the Personal NetWare server is returning a reply of a
  45. (Lock Fail).
  46.  
  47. SOLUTION:
  48. Install the administration copy to a substituted drive letter on the
  49. SERVER without the network loaded.  When asked for a server name
  50. enter the following:
  51.  
  52. \\SERVER_NAME\VOLUME_NAME  \
  53.  
  54. Installation Example:
  55.  
  56. Novell recommends creating a shared directory called MS_OFFICE with
  57. an actual directory path of C:\MSOFFICE, and give the shared
  58. directory the preferred drive letter O:.  
  59.  
  60. This example assumes:
  61.  
  62. - Microsoft Office Excel 5.0 is going to be installed as a shared
  63.   application.
  64. - The PNW server where Excel is to be installed is called SERVER_PC.
  65. - All users are to run Excel off of the O: drive letter.
  66.  
  67. SET UP THE NETWORK
  68.  
  69. A. Login as Supervisor.
  70. B. Launch NET ADMIN.
  71. C. Click on VIEW, SHARED DIRECTORIES.
  72. D. Press the INSERT key.
  73. E. Give the new shared directory the name of MS_OFFICE.
  74. F. Highlight the server, SERVER_PC, then click on OK.
  75. G. Enter the actual directory path, C:\MSOFFICE.
  76. H. Click on BROWSE PATH, double click on [-C-], click on Create,  and
  77.    enter MSOFFICE.
  78. I. Click on SUGGESTED DRIVE and select drive letter O:.
  79. J. Click on OK (leave Default Access Rights to ALL).
  80.  
  81. The list of network directories should update with the name of
  82. MS_OFFICE on server SERVER_PC and path of C:\MSOFFICE.
  83.  
  84. Exit the NET ADMIN utility.
  85.  
  86. REBOOT THE SERVER MACHINE WITHOUT LOADING THE NETWORK
  87. (Either add REM to the beginning of the CALL C:\NWCLIENT\STARTNET.BAT
  88. line in the Autoexec.BAT file and reboot or press <f8> during boot
  89. and load all but Startnet.BAT)
  90.  
  91. INSTALL EXCEL:
  92.  
  93. A. At the DOS prompt, issue the SUBST command to substitute drive
  94. letter O: for C:\MSOFFICE, i.e., SUBST O: C:\OFFICE
  95. B. Launch Windows.
  96. C. At the Program Manager, click on FILE, RUN, and enter A:\SETUP /A
  97. (the /A is for the administrative or network installation).
  98. D. When asked for the install directory path, change it to O:\EXCEL.
  99. E. The directory path for the MSAPPS directory should default to:
  100. O:\MSAPPS, accept this and continue.
  101. F. When asked for the network server name enter,
  102. \\SERVER_PC\MS_OFFICE
  103. G. A message will appear stating that setup could not connect to the
  104. network path, click on CONTINUE.
  105. H. Choose where the shared files are to be stored as prompted.
  106. I. Setup will then install the administrative files to the hard
  107. drive.
  108. J. After the installation is completed, exit Windows.
  109.  
  110. REBOOT THE SERVER MACHINE AND LOAD THE NETWORK
  111.   
  112. SETTING UP THE WORK STATIONS:
  113.  
  114. A. Map the MS_OFFICE network directory (created above), i.e, NET MAP
  115. MS_OFFICE (do not give it a drive letter).
  116. B. Launch Windows.
  117. C. At the Program Manager, click on File, Run, and Browse.  Select
  118. drive letter O:, and double click on EXCEL.  
  119. D. Double click on SETUP.EXE and click on OK.
